Tsunami 2010

Well yesterday was interesting to say the least. Pat got a wake-up call at 3:30 from the chief surgery resident warning us of the tsunami coming towards hawaii so we began to pack things up. lucky for us we were on the road by 5 and the traffic was flowing well, except at the gas stations and food stores. The first sirens didn't alarm until 6 so we missed out on traffic but anyone who was up early and turned on the radio or TV heard of the upcoming event. We headed to Tripler since Pat had to work and it's great location about 1,00 feet up on a mountain side. We first went upstairs to one of the surgery on-call room where Chloe played with her friend Scott. Once the cafeteria opened we got some breakfast with our friends (Stephanie and Heidi joined us at this time) which was very busy. After breakfast it was light outside and we headed farther up the hill to the family housing area that had a playground for the kids to play at. The view of the pearl arbor area was very nice up there. The kids had a great time playing up there all except the siren close to the playground when it went off for a minute or more. After about 2 hours up there we headed back down to the hospital and Stephanie and I put a blanket out on the grass and watched the ocean from there. The first wave was due at 11:05 in hilo on the big island and when nothing happened we thought it was over but about 20-30mins later the water started to recede out of their bay it seemed very real. luckily the waters around the islands pretty much slowly went out and in several times but no real large waves or any damage, thank God. So we headed home around 12:45 all very tired from the big Evac of 2010 but very happy nothing had happened and we learned a few tips if it were to happen again while we are here :)
